About the Literary Contest

The Samuel Eells Literary & Educational Foundation runs two literary competitions, one for undergraduate students and one for college graduates, as described below.

The 2017 Undergraduate Literary Competition is open until June 6, 2017!


Submissions are COMPLETELY ONLINE through our WEB-BASED SUBMISSION SITE.

Undergraduate Literary Competition

The Samuel Eells Literary & Educational Foundation Undergraduate Literary Competition is open to all undergraduate college students associated with SELEF at select schools. There are eight distinct categories: Fiction; Non-Fiction; Poetry; Photography; Music & Lyrics; Film; Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM); and Visual Arts.

The first-prize winner in each category is awarded $250. Based on the number of second, third, and fourth prizes awarded, cash grants may be made up to $100 per winner. A $1000 GRAND PRIZE is awarded to that single entry which shows the greatest level of overall excellent among all the categories.

College Graduate Literary Competition

The Samuel Eells Literary & Educational Foundation Graduate Literary Competition Graduate Literary Competition is open to all college graduates associated with SELEF at select schools. There are three distinct categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry.

The first-prize winner in each category is awarded $250 in the form of a charitable donation on the award recipient’s behalf. Based on the number of second and third prizes awarded, awards may be given in amounts up to $100 per winner, based on funds available and the number of awards granted. Donations must go to a charitable 501(c)(3) organization with a literary or educational mission of the award recipient’s choice. The SELEF Board reserves the right to review the designated charities.
